Global flax yarn trade witnessing growth since 2017

After the continuous decline from 2015 to 2017, the global trade of flax yarn has shown a sharp rise with a high CAGR (compound annual growth rate), according to data from TexPro. In terms of value, the global trade of flax yarn was $971.98 million in 2015, which increased to $1,058.46 million in 2018 registering a growth rate of 8.90 per cent.

The total trade gained by 14.41 per cent in 2018 over the previous year, and is anticipated to reach $1,153.37 million in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 2.88 per cent from 2018, according to Fibre2Fashion's market analysis tool TexPro.

The global export of flax yarn was $489.46 million in 2015, which reached $519.59 million in 2018 with a growth rate of 6.16 per cent. Overall export of flax yarn moved up by 12.02 per cent in 2018 over the previous year, and is expected to reach $551.58 million in 2021 with a CAGR of 2.01 per cent from 2018.

In terms of volume, the global export of flax yarn was 56.16 thousand tonnes in 2015, which rose by 42.80 per cent to 80.20 thousand tonnes in 2018. Overall export of flax yarn grew by 25.13 per cent in 2018 over the previous year, and is likely to reach 114.52 thousand tonnes in 2021 with a CAGR of 12.06 per cent from 2018.

In 2018, China (30,315.37 tonnes), Egypt (22,905.88 tonnes), Poland (8,422.95 tonnes), Italy (6,827.74 tonnes) and Belarus (2,702.10 tonnes) were the key exporters of flax yarn across the globe, together comprising 89.24 per cent of total exports. These were distantly followed by Lithuania (2,225.63 tonnes), France (1,573.10 tonnes), Belgium (1,053.14 tonnes) and Spain (728.70 tonnes).

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (1275.32 per cent), Poland (182.39 per cent) and Italy (153.80 per cent).

In value terms, China ($274.93 million), Italy ($97.53 million), Poland ($63.21 million), Lithuania ($19.43 million) and France ($10.88 million) were the key exporters of flax yarn across the globe in 2018, together comprising 89.68 per cent of total export. These were followed by Belgium ($8.40 million), Hong Kong ($7.76 million), Hungary ($6.36 million), and Spain ($4.50 million).

From 2013 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Italy (115.74 per cent), Poland (200.34 per cent) and Lithuania (12.80 per cent).
