After crosscheck, the impetus mainly came from 2-3D coarse denier fibers.
2-3D coarse denier fibers are usually used for needle-punched nonwovens. The sudden improvement of the demand for this kind of fibers originated from ES fiber. Recently, ES fiber demand was explosive and the price soared high. Downstream hot-air nonwoven also experienced short supply with price rising continually, while the needle-punched nonwoven made of PSF with coarse denier was just appropriate to replace hot-air nonwoven.
2-3D coarse denier PSF is mixed with low-melting PSF in proportion, and then hot rolled into needle-punched nonwoven. It was originally used for filtering, and both virgin PSF and re-PSF could be used, but at present, only virgin PSF can be applied as the production of face mask has a higher requirement for hygiene. In China, the major suppliers are Sanfame, Yizheng Chemical Fiber, Huahong and Quandi with total capacity of about 300kt. Facing surge of demand and low inventory, the plants have to raise prices.
Therefore, the plants in Jiangsu are active in price rise. However, in Fujian, the prices mostly keep stable as the plants there mainly produce direct-spun PSF for spinning which is facing bearish demand.
Looking from the capacity proportion of different direct-spun PSF products, low-melting PSF, the one for spunlace and the one for needle-punched nonwoven only take up about 20%, which would be hard to drive the one for spinning with 70% market share, but may cheer up the market slightly.
After this pandemic, direct-spun PSF plants may take differential products into consideration more in a bid to reduce the risks of single product.
